The Sustainability of Palm Oil

Sustainable Solutions for Industrial Transformation

At W2Wcarbon Craft, we specialize in regenerative innovation, transforming agricultural waste into certified biocarbon for industrial decarbonisation. Making sustainability one of our key values

From Traditional Crop to Global Resource

Palm oil has evolved from a traditional West African crop into a globally traded resource—used in food, cosmetics, biofuels, and now, industrial decarbonisation. Historically cultivated for its nutritional and ceremonial value, the oil palm was revered for its abundance and ecological role.

Colonial expansion in the 19th century transformed palm oil into an industrial commodity, with Southeast Asia—particularly Malaysia and Indonesia—becoming global leaders in production. Today, palm oil is prized for its high yield, oxidative stability, and cost efficiency, found in over half of consumer goods worldwide.

Over the past 20 years, palm oil production has grown significantly across Malaysia, Indonesia, parts of Africa, and South America, with increasing emphasis on sustainability, certification, and ethical sourcing. Key measures include:

  • MSPO (Malaysia) and ISPO (Indonesia) national certification schemes

  • RSPO global standards for deforestation-free sourcing, traceability, and fair labour

  • ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) for bio-based and circular feedstocks, widely adopted in Europe and globally

  • NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation) commitments by major producers

  • Satellite monitoring, grievance mechanisms, and smallholder inclusion frameworks

  • Expansion of certified plantations in Ghana, Nigeria, Colombia, and Brazil, supporting regional development

  • Waste valorisation initiatives, turning palm kernel shells (PKS) into high-value materials like activated carbon

This regenerative shift supports circular economy goals and industrial decarbonisation. PKS-derived carbon materials offer high microporosity, thermal stability, and cost-effective scalability—making them ideal for sectors like steel.

Emphasis on Sustainability
